Shift the Question: From “Why a Gym?” to “Why Your Gym?”
The fitness industry is noisy. New gyms open all the time, pop-up apps promise fast results, and social media is full of influencers promoting their workouts. It can feel overwhelming—especially if you’re starting or growing your business.
Many gym owners and fitness professionals fall into the trap of thinking, “There’s already so much out there… why would anyone choose me?” It’s easy to get discouraged or feel like you’re not good enough.
But here’s the truth: you’re not just another gym or trainer. There’s no one else like you.
Let me explain.
We’ve been thinking about moving back down South recently, so I Googled fitness centres—mainly because I was looking for somewhere to run my series of strength workouts. Unsurprisingly, there were loads of results. But I didn’t panic or think, “There’s too much competition.” (Not because I’m big-headed!) It’s because I know this:
People don’t just choose a gym—they choose you.
A few months ago, I was in Jarrolds (if you’re from Norwich, you’ll know it). I ran into a former client I hadn’t seen in ages. She said, “I thought you’d moved back—if you do, let me know. I’d love to train with you again.”
There are lots of personal trainers in the world and she wants to train with me. We created a connection.
There are plenty of fitness businesses like yours, but none of them are you. And that’s the point.
Your goal isn’t to be better than everyone else. It’s to be more you—to bring more of your voice, your values, and your energy to the business.
People are looking for someone who gets them. Someone they feel safe with, someone who understands their life and goals, and who’s more than just a fitness professional.
So ask yourself:
What sets you apart?
Is it your client experience? Your energy? Your community? Your values?
Here’s how to highlight what makes your business the one they choose.
1. Highlight Your Niche
Ask yourself: What do I do really well?
In my fitness business, I help people build strength and fitness for their everyday life. I’m not your go-to if you want to compete in bodybuilding or train for the Olympics.
But if you want to:
- Feel stronger in your body
- Build consistency that fits your life
- Be able to do more of what you love without feeling exhausted
…then I’m your woman.
So what’s your niche?
Are you brilliant with postnatal clients? Great at helping busy professionals stay fit? Do you specialise in strength training for people over 40? Or maybe you make nutrition easy for families?
Lean into it.
This is how you stand out—not by doing everything, but by doing your thing really well.
Remember: you don’t need everyone to choose you—just the right people.
2. Focus on Real Results & Personal Stories
People trust people. Not polished ads or bold claims—but stories.
One of the best things I did in my business was share my clients’ real stories. One client, Linda*, made great progress with her strength goals. When we shared her journey, it wasn’t just about “before and after” pictures. It was about her confidence, her energy, her story.
Her friends saw the post and thought:
- “If Linda can do it, maybe I can too.”
- “Linda trusts this coach, so I do too.”
That’s the power of real stories. They’re not promotional—they’re relatable.
So how can you do this?
- Interview a client on video or in a post
- Share behind-the-scenes from their training
- Ask clients what they were nervous about when they joined—and how they feel now
Your current clients are your biggest marketing asset.
Why did they choose you over others? What did they feel before joining? What do they love most now?
Keep it honest. Keep it human. And always make it about them, not you.
3. Build Local Partnerships That Build Trust
Business is better when it’s rooted in relationships.
I have great connections with local, complementary businesses. Some are nutritionists, some are massage therapists, others run wellness shops. Most of them I connected with simply because we had things in common and liked each other. But the bonus? We refer clients to one another, and we’ve even collaborated on workshops and events.
When you partner with someone who shares your values, you:
- Help each other grow
- Offer more value to your clients
- Build trust in the community
So think:
- Who are 3 people locally that serve the same clients as you in a different way?
- Who could you approach for a collaboration, guest post, or joint event?
Don’t overthink it. Reach out, have a chat, and see what happens.
4. Promote Your Values
A gym is just a space. A coach is just a title.
Your values are what make it meaningful.
I started personal training because I wanted people to feel more energised and capable in their everyday lives—not just to “look good” but to feel good. That expanded into coaching, where I help other business owners align their work with their life and values.
Most people don’t realise how much of a difference coaching—or training—can make until they experience it. But if you’re clear about why you do what you do, they’ll feel that.
So take a moment and reflect:
- Why did you start?
- What do you believe in?
- What frustrates you about the fitness industry—and what are you doing differently?
Your story builds connection.
Your values build trust.
That’s more powerful than any limited-time offer.
5. Make Your Marketing Personal and Practical
Here are a few simple, actionable ways to make your business stand out online and in your community:
- Feature a client of the month. Share their story, why they joined, and what they’ve achieved.
- Use video stories on Instagram. Let people hear your voice and see your face—it builds familiarity.
- Create a welcome guide. Include your values, what to expect, and a warm introduction to your community.
- Host a free local event. Invite new leads to try a taster session, talk, or Q&A. Let them experience what you’re about.
Remember: People don’t just want fitness. They want connection, confidence, community—and a coach who gets them.
There will always be other gyms.
There will always be other trainers.
But there will never be another YOU.
That’s your edge.
That’s your superpower.
