What if the biggest thing holding your business back wasn’t the challenges you face—but how you see them?

Facing challenges in your business can feel overwhelming. You’re not alone. Every business owner faces struggles—gaining clients, losing clients, dealing with unpredictable turnover. It’s frustrating, and it can lead to self-doubt, stress, and second-guessing yourself.

The problem isn’t client acquisition. The problem isn’t retention.

The real problem? Most business owners see challenges as roadblocks, not opportunities.

What if, instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” you asked, “What can I learn from this?”

This one mindset shift will transform everything:
How you make decisions
How you interact with clients
How you grow your business

Master this, and you won’t just survive challenges—you’ll thrive because of them. Are you ready to shift your perspective?

The Default Reaction:
Why Most Business Owners Struggle with Challenges

It was Monday, 16th March 2020—the day the Prime Minister announced a national lockdown. I was bedridden with COVID, and just four days later, on Friday, 20th March, I was supposed to be moving into my new house.

“F*ck.”

As a self-employed business owner who made a living working face-to-face with clients, I had one burning question:
What am I going to do?

At first, I panicked. The fear set in. Everything I’d built felt like it was slipping away.

What I didn’t realise was that this moment—one of the hardest and most uncertain of my career—would completely change how I ran my business forever. It would force me to adapt, grow, and see opportunities where I’d never looked before.

What people don’t realise is that…
When someone is stressed, most business owners react in one of two ways:

They overthink—spiralling down a rabbit hole of stress and frustration.
They avoid it—pretending the problem doesn’t exist and hoping it goes away.

Which one are you?

When you get a problem in your business, do you bury your head in the sand and hope it magically disappears?
Or do you obsess over it, thinking, “Why me? Why does this keep happening?”

I was the latter. Avoidance was my default.

But by this point, I’d spent four years immersed in personal development. And I’d learned two powerful things:

👉 The problem isn’t the challenge itself. It’s how we think about the challenge.
👉 It’s not the situation—it’s our interpretation of it.

The Mindset Shift: From “Why Me?” to “What Can I Learn?”

Back in 2020, I could have thought:
“All my clients are going to leave. I’ll never be able to pay my mortgage. I’ll lose my business, my house… and my entire future.”

And then? I could have curled up on the sofa and binge-watched The Crown while waiting for everything to fall apart.

But I didn’t.

Instead, I made a decision:

There’s an opportunity here—I just don’t know what it is yet. But I’m willing to embrace it and see what happens.

So, I asked myself: What can I do about my situation?

✔ I paused my mortgage for three months to take financial pressure off.

✔ I got as many of my clients online as I could—even the ones who swore they’d “never train virtually.”

✔ I created an online FitCamp to keep my community engaged.

✔ I built an online class for my 70+ group, ensuring they stayed active and connected.

✔ I signed up for a personal development course, choosing to grow instead of sitting in fear.

Was it easy? No.

Creating a plan and taking action in the unknown is hard. It can feel like the world is against you.

But the moment you shift from “This is happening to me”“This is an opportunity”, everything changes.

Every challenge—every difficult client, every unexpected setback, every stressful situation—is here to grow you as a business owner and as a person.

I wouldn’t be where I am today, or who I am today, without locking down in 2020.

When you’re faced with difficulties in your business, ask yourself:

What can I learn from this?
What opportunity is hidden here?
What’s not working right now—and what can I change?

The answers to these questions will transform your business.

How to Train Your Brain to See Opportunity Instead of Obstacles

  1. Catch Yourself

When a problem arises, pause. Take a breath. Catch yourself.

Notice if you’re slipping into your usual patterns—avoiding the issue or spiraling into overthinking.

Be honest with yourself: Is this reaction helping me? Or is it making things worse?

The truth? Stress doesn’t solve problems. Action does.

Instead of getting stuck, try this:
👉 Notice your thoughts—become aware of where your mind is going.
👉 Move your body—go for a walk, shake off the tension, let your thoughts flow.
👉 Feel your emotions fully—cry, get angry, be frustrated if you need to. Suppressing emotions only makes things harder.

Once you’ve processed it, ask yourself: What’s the opportunity here?

  1. Shift Your Mindset

Now, let’s get logical.

Where are you channeling your emotional energy? Is it productive? Or is it just making you feel worse?

Let’s take client retention as an example. Instead of freaking out about people leaving, look at the facts:

✅ I onboarded X new clients in the last 3 months.
✅ I retained Y clients.
✅ Z clients left.

That’s it. Everything else—“People are leaving, other gym owners are better than me, maybe I’m not good enough”—is just a story you’ve created.

The stories you tell yourself will either keep you stuck or move you forward.

Once you separate fact from emotion, you can start making powerful decisions instead of reacting out of fear.

  1. Take Ownership

Blaming clients, competition, or the economy might feel justified—but does it help? Not really.

Real success starts when you take radical responsibility and ask:
👉 What can I do about this?
👉 What’s within my control to change?

The moment you stop saying “It’s their fault” and start saying “What can I do about it?”—everything shifts.

It’s hard. But so is staying stuck.

Like the analogy says:
“It’s hard to lose weight. It’s hard to be overweight. So choose your hard.”

The same goes for business.

So, which hard will you choose?

Real-World Proof: Leaders Who Thrive Through Challenges

You’ve probably heard how Airbnb transformed their business during the pandemic.

Let’s be honest, when the world goes into lockdown, travel and accommodation are the last things people are booking. In one month alone, Forbes reported that Airbnb had more cancellations than bookings! Imagine watching your business crumble overnight.

So, what did Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, do?

I don’t know him personally, so maybe he freaked out for a minute (because who wouldn’t?). But after that, he did something powerful—he looked at his options. Instead of dwelling on what was lost, he asked:

👉 What can we create?
👉 How can we adapt to what people need right now?

And that’s when Airbnb pivoted.

They turned a crisis into an opportunity.

The result? Airbnb survived, adapted, and came back stronger than ever.

This is proof that the most successful entrepreneurs don’t have fewer challenges—they just handle them differently.

So next time you hit a setback, ask yourself:
Am I reacting out of fear?
Or am I looking for the opportunity hidden inside the challenge?

Because the moment you shift your mindset, you open the door to possibilities you never even knew existed.
