Money Mindset: What more money actually gives you.

There I was, sitting in my cabin, thinking deeply about my prices. I’d go back and forth in my mind:
“I want to increase my prices”
“What if everyone leaves?”
“But everyone around me keeps telling me I charge too little.”
“What if people don’t think my sessions are worth that amount of money?”

I remember lying in bed at night, trying to calculate what I needed to earn to cover everything… then talking myself out of raising my prices the next morning. I’d think, “Maybe I’ll wait until next month.” The time and energy I spent in my head trying to decide whether to increase my prices, how much by, and how on earth I’d tell everyone? It was exhausting.

If you’ve ever been in the same position, you’re not alone. This is such a common debate that so many practitioners have with themselves.

I remember watching a video on Instagram. The story went like this:
A man owned a bakery and was the most popular baker in town. He sold reasonably priced goods and was so busy that he didn’t have any time to create new or better products. So, he doubled his prices. Half of his customers left and never returned, but the other half stayed. He earned the same amount of money but had more time to create better recipes and develop higher-quality products.

The cost of not increasing your prices? Everything else around you keeps increasing, so eventually you won’t be able to afford what you used to. That’s when the resentment starts. You’ll start questioning why you’re doing so much for free. Why should you? You probably won’t even have the energy or time to do it.

What happens when you put everyone else’s comfort ahead of your own value?

The price of milk keeps going up and people still buy milk.

When I increased my prices, some of my clients could no longer afford to see me. They found other personal trainers. And some clients just expected it, it was no big deal.

You see, when you increase your prices, some clients will stay, and some will leave.
But what if raising your prices isn’t about your clients at all?

If you’re thinking, “That story about the baker is great… but I’m still unsure about raising my prices,”
It could be about your self-worth.

Let me explain.

I’ve been on a 10-year journey to explore my relationship with money. I used to hate the “money” conversation; telling clients they hadn’t paid, or that an invoice was due. I undercharged for years, living inside the story of “Oh, but I’m new… I’ve only just started.”

What I discovered was this:
When I was a little girl, I’d go on walks with my grandma and she would say, “Those houses are lovely. It’s where all the fat pigs live.”
She believed that if you had a lot of money, you were greedy.
I took on that same belief; I didn’t want to be greedy.
So I undercharged, overworked, and avoided the subject of money for years.
Over time, I turned that belief around.

Have you taken on someone else’s belief around money?

Take some time to reflect on your relationship with money. Listen to the stories you’ve created and where they came from:

  • What do I think of people who have lots of money?
  • What am I worried about if I start earning more?
  • What stops me from increasing my prices or asking for more?
  • How do I feel when it comes to asking for payment?

What could raising your prices bring to you?

Since doing the inner work around my money story, I’ve completely reframed how I talk about money. I used to hate asking for payment, and if someone didn’t pay, I’d have this sickening feeling in my tummy. I really wanted more money, but I didn’t even know why. It felt like every time I received more, it disappeared somewhere.

Now? Money seems to flow in.
We always seem to have enough.
And I no longer need money to fix things, I want it to buy time.

Time with my family.
To create more in my business.
& give more value to my clients, and give generously for free when I want to.
Time to do the things I actually value in my day.

“Things” have never meant much to me. I don’t need loads of meals out or flashy stuff.
I love running my business and spending time with people I love; with enough energy and time to enjoy it.

Ask yourself:

  • What could having more money provide for me?
  • What’s truly important to me in life, and how could money bring me more of that?

What’s next when you start to have more freedom around money?

Imagine what your future could look like.

You might feel less anxiety around money.
You might not want billions, but maybe you’d feel more relaxed and calm talking about money, managing your finances, or investing in your growth.
Maybe you’d have more time for hobbies, friends, family… or more creativity in your business.

Money isn’t the root of all evil, despite what some people might say.
Having money gives you choices.
It lets you help others.
It gives you energy and ease.
And it reduces the stress that holds so many people back.
