Every fitness professional has moments of doubt – but the best ones don’t let it hold them back. If uncertainty has been creeping in, you might be growing in ways you haven’t even noticed.
“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” — Albert Einstein
Nobody grows from the easy times (though that would be nice, wouldn’t it?). Real growth happens in the moments that challenge you – when a client cancels out of nowhere, when it feels like everyone else is smashing it except you, or when you’re putting in the work but leads have dried up.
What no one tells you is that in these moments, you have two choices: avoid and run away, or lean in and take action. If you choose the latter, these tough times force you to reflect, adapt, and move forward. And every time you do, you’re building something invaluable—resilience and confidence.
Today, I’m breaking down the growth you might have missed so you can see just how far you’ve come in your business. And remember—this doesn’t just impact your business; it impacts the people who need you most.
The Struggle: Why Self-Doubt Creeps In
Running and growing your own business can feel like you’re constantly being watched—by clients, competitors, and even yourself. You’re expected to make the right decisions, say the right things, and never let anyone down.
And in a world where you can see everyone else’s highlight reel, it’s easy to feel like you’re the only one struggling. Like success comes easier to everyone else.
That’s when doubt starts creeping in.
Despite your experience, despite your qualifications… you still feel like you’re not quite good enough. Like everyone else has it figured out, and you’re the only one second-guessing every move.
- “Am I doing this right?”
- “Am I making the right decisions?”
- “What’s the best way to invest my time? My money?”
The dialogue in your head is relentless—questioning, criticising, overanalysing.
You lay awake at night, replaying conversations:
- “Did I say the right thing?”
- “Why haven’t they come back?”
- “Did I do something wrong?”
- “It’s impossible to please everyone!”
The responsibility of running a business can feel overwhelming, and when things don’t go as planned, it’s easy to believe you’re doing it wrong or that you should be doing better.
But what if self-doubt isn’t a sign of failure? What if it’s proof that you’re stepping up?
The Growth You Don’t See: How Business Shapes You Over Time
Doubt is normal. Questioning yourself is normal. But every challenge you face is shaping you into a stronger business owner.
You know that feeling after finishing a brutal workout? That moment when you think, “I could take on the world!” (That’s not just me, right?!) It’s one of the things I love about weight training.
I’ll look at a workout and think, “That looks disgusting.” But I break it down, one rep at a time. It hurts. It’s tough. But every time I lift, I grow—not just physically, but mentally. I build resilience. Confidence. The belief that next time, I can do it again.
Business is no different.
A client leaves, and you feel disheartened. You think, “Why me?” The road ahead looks tough, but you take it on. You break it down, piece by piece. And before you know it—you’ve done it.
Do you ever stop and reflect on just how much you’ve grown?
Here’s what you’ve built without even realising:
- Resilience & Confidence: You handle pressure and setbacks better than you think.
- Emotional Intelligence: Difficult conversations don’t shake you as much anymore. You communicate with clarity.
- Decision-Making Skills: The more decisions you make, the more you trust yourself.
Every challenge, every setback, every tough moment—it’s shaping you into someone who’s built to last.
And that’s what creates true confidence.
Key Mindset Shifts That Build Confidence
Back in 2014, I made a big mistake.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes in business. But this one haunted me for a while.
I was completing my personal training qualification. The guy coaching me fell out with the company and told me, “You need to pay me the remaining money.” So, I cancelled my payment plan and sent him the final payment.
Except… I still couldn’t access the system.
When I reached out to the guy in charge, he said, “No, you need to pay me the money.”
Long story short—I paid for half my course twice. Then I found out the training wasn’t even recognised. So, I had to do a second personal training course.
At the time, something didn’t feel right. I rushed into choosing the course. I ignored my gut and got caught up in outside noise.
I felt like a right amateur.
Last year, I found myself in a similar situation—feeling rushed into a decision. But this time, I stopped. I listened to that feeling. And I realised just how much I’d grown.
This is what I’d learnt:
- Failures are just learning opportunities: Every mistake is a lesson that makes you stronger.
- Trust your gut: If something doesn’t feel right, walk away.
- Recognise your progress: You’re growing, even when you don’t see it.
In business, there’s always going to be outside noise. But at the end of the day, you know your business better than anyone. Trust yourself.
Practical Steps to Build Confidence in Business
Self-doubt is inevitable when you’re growing a business. But the goal isn’t to eliminate it—it’s to quiet it down and trust yourself more.
Confidence doesn’t come from waiting until you feel ready. It comes from taking action, proving to yourself that you can handle challenges, and recognising how far you’ve come.
Here are some practical steps to help you see your growth:
- Keep a journal of all your wins. I know someone who reads their client feedback whenever that critical voice creeps in. It’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong, but sometimes, you need a reminder of everything that’s going right.
- Ask for feedback—but don’t depend on it. Getting different perspectives can be valuable, but don’t let external validation define your worth. Use feedback to refine your approach, not to determine your confidence.
- Shift your perspective on challenges. Instead of seeing setbacks as proof you’re not good enough, look at them as opportunities to grow. Every problem you solve makes you stronger in business.
- Take courageous action daily. Don’t wait until you feel “ready” to do something. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. Confidence comes from doing, not overthinking.
- Surround yourself with growth-minded people. As Jim Rohn says, you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If you want to grow, put yourself in an environment that pushes you forward.
Growing a business isn’t about never doubting yourself. It’s about learning to move forward despite the doubt. And the more you do that, the quieter that voice becomes.
Final Thoughts: You’re Becoming the Person You Once Looked Up To
I’ve been on this journey for the last 10 years—building confidence and growing as a business owner—and I can tell you, it doesn’t happen overnight.
I still doubt myself. But these days, I lean into it. When self-doubt creeps in, I pause and ask myself:
👉 Is this trying to tell me something? (This isn’t right for my business.)
👉 Or is it just trying to protect me from something? (I don’t want to look stupid.)
A lot of people see self-doubt as a bad thing, but really, it’s a sign that you’re growing. If you’re feeling it, chances are, you’re on the edge of a breakthrough. You’re challenging old beliefs and stepping outside your comfort zone.
The key is not to get stuck in it. Pause. Challenge your own thoughts. Then take action.
One day, you’ll realise—you’ve become the person you once looked up to.
